The Impact of Technology on Your Neck: Understanding and Treating Tech Neck
What is “Tech Neck”?
Although it sounds like the latest smart device to hit the market, it isn’t. “Tech Neck” is a term to simply describe the appearance of prematurely aging skin caused by overused neck muscles that occurs through repetitive downward viewing of smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Every time you glance down at your smartphone or browse on your tablet, you are tilting your neck down and essentially ruining its muscles, causing early sagging, and wrinkling. Think about your head and neck position when you are in bed propped up on a pillow looking at your phone and how it looks when you catch a glimpse of this doubled chin, wrinkled neck position in the forward-facing camera! It’s not pretty, and this is the reason why many injectors are starting to get more and more requests for neck rejuvenation. This isn’t just a complaint from women; men are starting to become bothered by this premature aging issue, too. Even clients as young as 25 years old are starting to complain of wrinkled and sagging skin on their necks. So now that you know what the cause of Tech Neck is, how do we fix it?
Depending on severity, we have several options…
First, prevention is always key. Start by improving your posture and keep your screens at eye level. Also, implementing a good skin care routine that includes your neck can help the appearance of those pesky fine lines and give your skin a tighter and more supple appearance. Our neck retexturing balm called SMOOTH is a great start.
For the deeper “necklace” lines, the next step would be to inject them with a thinner hyaluronic acid filler like RHA Redensity. This will help to hydrate and elevate the wrinkles so that the skin takes on a smoother appearance in those areas. This type of treatment is usually done 1-2 times per year. The average cost is between $650-$1300.
For neck skin that might be a bit lose or starting to sag, collagen-stimulating treatments like Hyperdilute Radiesse and Sculptra are very helpful. They work by bio-stimulating instead of volumizing; with brand-new collagen and elastin production beginning as quickly as four weeks following injection. This creates long-term skin tightening and thickening, which reduces fine lines, crepey skin, and sagging. These treatments average between $800-$1450 per session. Usually, two treatments, 6 weeks apart are recommended.
Also, micro-tox injections work well for mild to moderate textural changes on the neck skin. By adding tiny doses of neurotoxin all over the neck, the skin takes on a tighter appearance. These injections last around 3-6 months and average $550 per treatment.
Last, but not least, is neck rejuvenation by laser resurfacing! Our laser, the Sciton Halo, is the first hybrid fractional laser that uses both ablative and nonablative technology to effectively treat multiple layers of the skin. It works beautifully on sun-damaged, aging, and tech neck-affected skin. This treatment is usually offered in two sessions, 6 weeks apart. The downtime on the neck is minimal compared to the face. The price for this laser therapy averages $1750 per session.
